It's time for an update, keeping it at 4 stars for now. I came in with my sister after seeing a show at the pioneer center. She had never been, and I think I last came in 2019 or 2020. There were 1 or 2 tables occupied when we arrived around 5 pm on a Saturday. I was a little concerned eating seafood in a restaurant that seemed super slow, but we forged on. The oyster bar had 5 or 6 oyster varieties, piled up on a beautiful display of ice. They seemed to range in price from $3.50, $3.90 a piece. It's spendier than I'd like, but the quality is there. I ordered 6 kusshi, and they were shucked really nicely, clean, and absolutely full of liquor too. They brought out the condiment toppings, which included "cocktail sauce", a dime sized amount of horseradish, and a cucumber onion medly that was chopped a little funky (rods instead of dices). They didn't have any mignonette, which I did think was weird since they offer raw oysters. Oh, and one lemon slice cut in half. It felt stingy was all, but we made due, and they brought more horseradish when requested. The horseradish wasn't spicy at all, and the cocktail sauce seemed like ketchup. I'm making a point of this because for $3.50-$4 ,per oyster, you should have the best quality toppings and mignionette, too. My sister ordered the calamari at $21, again, pricy, but they were cooked well with rings and tentacles, salted and tender. Not really crunchy crunchy, if that's what you like, but they seemed fresh, so no complaints. For main courses, my sister ordered the clam linguine ($29), and a side of a spicy fish piece ($10!!), and I chose the cioppino option. Both were good sized portions, served hot too, you could tell it was all freshly composed. The piece of fish was pretty tiny for $10, I didn't try it, but my sister said it was delicious. We split the cioppino and linguine up a bit, with the server easily providing us two small bowls so we could share. The linguine sauce was creamy, but not heavy, could have used a bit of salt and pepper, but wasn't required to enjoy it. It's had lots of clams, diced tomatoes, and spinach, too. The clams were pretty sandy, but not enough to detract like in my previous visit and they were cooked right with not being overdone and rubbery. The ciopinno was freaking amazing on first taste. They use seasonings here! I honestly think it's the best version I've ever had dining out. It had mussels, clams, snow crab, lobster claw, seemingly 2 types of shrimp, and seemingly a couple types of fish. The body meat of the crab was the best, soaked up lots of broth. All the seafood was cooked perfectly, extremely fresh. The fish surprised me the most. I normally dislike the fish pieces in cioppino because they get dried out often. The fish in this was plentiful and also soaked up the broth so so well. I'm still amazed days later. Anyways, it's spendy for sure, but it's seafood, and it feels and tastes like some of the freshest in town (despite being fairly slow). I think it is back in rotation for date night again. I hope they stay open. Sometimes it feels like they struggle to have business. Also, it was quite cozy inside for winter, and of course, the patio is just great and inviting in the summer.
I've walked by Smee's a dozen times and finally came in the other day for a quick bite to eat with my mom before a show. The restaurant is very open with lots of seating indoors and outdoors - I'm sure it's fabulous to sit out there in the summertime along the river! They also have bar seating with a few game machines as well. When we got there, there was no one else in the restaurant so we were sat right away. We chose to sit at the bar. The bartender (possibly owner/manager, unfortunately I did not get the chance to ask), was very kind and quick to serve us. He made excellent recommendations and answered any questions we had. We both ordered wine and just a small appetizer. My mom ordered the bruschetta and I ordered the steamed clams. Both of these were absolutely incredible, bursting with flavor, and I highly recommend them! After we left and got to our other venue, my mother quickly realized she had left money in the machine she was playing. When she called the restaurant, she was initially told there was no money on the machines which was very unfortunate. But, she decided to go back in after our show just to verify. It turns out the gentleman behind the bar had cashed it out and held on to it in hopes that she would be back. Very grateful for his honesty/integrity!
Four of us came here for dinner on a Friday evening ahead of a magic show at the Pioneer Theatre. We walked up and were seated right away as the restaurant wasn't very busy. I was looking forward to eating here as I hadn't been before. There were many wonderful sounding things on the menu, but I was taken aback by some of the prices which narrowed down what I was willing to try down to only a couple of things. Two of us ended up ordering the cod fish and chips and two of us ordered the Asian style seared ahi salad. The meals came out pretty quickly and looked good on the plate. The one complaint about the fish and chips was that the serving size of the coleslaw was rather small. The seared ahi salad looked great as well. The ahi was tasty, but the salad didn't have any dressing on it. That was quickly remedied by the waitress bringing us some vinaigrette, but it would be an Asian style dressing for this dish would be a great addition. The restaurant itself was stylish and has a robot back-waiter. Everyone was friendly and overall the food was tasty. If we are looking to have an extravagant seafood meal in the future we will return.
Skew's has a great location right along the river with a small outdoor seating area and an upscale style of decor inside. A great little place to grab lunch and enjoy the weather. However, their prices are fairly high and for what you get, I'm just not convinced it's worth it. A small plate of fish and chips will run you over $20 and while it's some of the best fish and chips I've had, the portion size is small and I just can't justify spending that much money on it to have again. The service is fast, friendly, and efficient and I'd be willing to try some of their more inspired dishes that seem to range between price points and might be a little more bang for your buck. But I was feeling fish and chips this particular day, and while the breading didn't disappoint and the dipping sauces were flavorful I just can't justify the price point.
We are transplants from the East Coast and so I had been looking forward to visiting Smee's for seafood. Husband and I had lunch on the patio on a Friday in perfect Reno August weather. The patio seating is extensive, well covered, and provides a wonderful view of the Truckee and the south side of the Riverwalk. Service was excellent. We enjoyed talking with Pamela and she was attentive and friendly throughout. Made a great recommendation for a dry Reisling. We also were lucky to meet Jon and converse about the restaurant; seems like a great guy who really cares about the customer experience. We started with a dozen oysters from the raw bar. We are always excited to try oysters from different regions and were able to enjoy two varieties from British Columbia and also Kumamoto oysters from Humbolt County, CA. West coast oysters are definitely smaller than east coast, but we loved all of them (my preference is for the Kumies - sweet and briny). The oysters were very smooth and fresh. Condiments come in individual little bowls, which I thought was a great touch. I love fish and chips and try them everywhere we go. The Smee's fish tasted very fresh and was definitely moist; the batter was light and very crispy. Really enjoyed it and will try the spicy version next visit. The fries are pedestrian but the cole slaw is very good. Husband enjoyed the lobster roll and the pricing was more favorable than we were used to in CT. The sandwich had a generous portion of lobster meat. Prices are a little high and the menu is fairly basic. But the food is really done well, the atmosphere is worth it, and the seafood is really fresh. We will definitely return to try other menu items. And we will be recommending Smee's to our out-of-town wedding guests in October!
Been so busy you haven't been able to go out to dinner for a few weeks. My wife found this place on yelp. I was in the mood for some clam sport delays, and I saw on the menu they had that. We arrived early Sunday afternoon about 4:30 PM. We are just had a good workout at Sports west and didn't feel like driving home. Quite a few tables are open, however I can tell you, lots of cars were downtown for a concert, and this place is filled up by 5 PM. It was crazy busy.... We were quite happy that we got there before all of the rush. I started out with my signature Cadillac margarita, and my wife got a pink pearl cocktail. Took a while to get the cocktails, they actually sat at the bar for maybe 10 minutes before the server got to them. So the drink was a little bit on the water inside. Other than that, The evening was pretty damn good. What we ordered: Cadillac margarita on the rocks no salt Pink pearl cocktail Fanny bay raw Oysters Steamed clams in a white wine butter sauce (waitress came to the table and said they were out of clams?. Strange to be one of the first tables in and no clams? Halibut fish and chips The food arrived fairly quickly and everything was actually quite delicious. The only real complaint I have about the oysters, as they gave a very small amount of cocktail sauce, barely enough for three oysters. There was actually as much horseradish on the condiment plate as there was cocktail sauce. Also there was no hot sauce, I'm used to having Tabasco or some kind of hot sauce with my oysters. Other than that they didn't taste really good. I did have to go back to the bar and ask the bartender to put some Grand Marnier in my Cadillac margarita. Not sure if she forgot it, or just put a little tiny bit, but that was not an issue either as the margarita was good. Desi was our waitress and she was friendly if not really busy. Possibly immigrants downtown kept them from having enough workers... The quality of food was really good though, service was friendly. Just need to add a little more cocktail sauce, put some more Grand Marnier in the margarita, and maybe work on staffing lol.
